Search officials said K-9 Jager and handler Jim Lopez were the first to locate Derek in the wooded area. Medical examiners responded to the scene, and authorities began processing the area as part of the ongoing investigation.

Derek was last seen on April 29 after leaving a Target store at Camp Creek Marketplace. Investigators previously said surveillance footage showed no obvious signs of distress before he separated from friends. Those friends later reported him missing after being unable to contact him.

During the weeks that followed, law enforcement conducted multiple searches in areas connected to Derek’s last known movements. Authorities also traced his cellphone to the vicinity of Redwine Road, prompting extensive search operations involving specialized units, drones, and K-9 teams.

The location where Derek was ultimately found has raised difficult questions for family members and supporters. Some relatives have publicly expressed concerns about how his body remained undiscovered despite previous searches in the same general area.
