Muscatine murder-suicide leaves 6 victims dead after estranged husband and father allegedly carries out family shooting rampage

The Muscatine, Iowa community is reeling after a tragic series of shootings on June 1, 2026, left seven people dead, including the suspected gunman, in what investigators believe was a family-related act of violence spanning multiple locations across the city.

According to the Muscatine Police Department, officers were first dispatched around 12:12 p.m. to a residence in the 210 block of Park Avenue following reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, officers discovered four individuals suffering from fatal gunshot wounds inside the home. All four victims were pronounced dead at the scene.

As the investigation unfolded, authorities identified 52-year-old Ryan Willis McFarland as the primary suspect. Police allege that McFarland left the area before officers arrived, prompting an immediate search.

A short time later, officers located McFarland along the Riverfront Trail near a pedestrian bridge. Authorities reported that he had sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Emergency personnel attempted life-saving measures, but he was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Investigators subsequently connected two additional locations to the case. At a residence on the 1500 block of Mill Street, officers discovered an adult male who had been fatally shot. Another victim was later found deceased inside a business on Grand Avenue. These discoveries brought the total number of fatalities to seven, including the suspect.

Officials have indicated that all of the victims are believed to have been related to McFarland. Among those identified were his wife, 51-year-old Lesa McFarland, and two of their children. Authorities have withheld the names of some victims while family notifications continue.

Law enforcement officials stated that the incident appears to be connected to a domestic dispute, although investigators continue to examine the circumstances that led to the violence. Authorities also confirmed that McFarland had a prior criminal history but did not release additional details.

The tragedy has had a profound impact on the local community. The Muscatine Community School District announced that two employees and two students were among those killed. In response, counseling and support services were made available at several schools throughout the district to assist students, staff, and families coping with the loss.
