The Westfield, Wisconsin community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Steven Scott “Steve” Janke, who tragically passed away following a car accident on Sunday, May 31, 2026, at the age of 48. His sudden passing has left family members, friends, colleagues, veterans, and community leaders grieving the loss of a man whose life was defined by service, leadership, and compassion for others. Born on August 1, 1977, to Alyson and Terry Janke, Steve was raised in rural Westfield, where he developed the strong values of hard work, family, and community that would guide him throughout his life. A 1995 graduate of Westfield High School, Steve was active in athletics, participating in football, basketball, and baseball while earning the respect of classmates and coaches alike. Following graduation, Steve answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Marine Corps in 1996. During his military service, he was stationed in Hawaii and Okinawa before completing his enlistment in 1999. Those who knew him say his time in the Marines helped shape the discipline, leadership, and sense of purpose that remained central to his life long after his military career ended. After returning home to Wisconsin, Steve continued his family’s dairy farming tradition while also dedicating himself to public service. He served on the Westfield Area School Board and the CESA 5 Board of Control, always working to strengthen opportunities for local families and future generations. In 2017, Steve joined the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs, where he became widely respected for his advocacy on behalf of military members and veterans transitioning into civilian life. He played a key role in launching Mission Wisconsin, an initiative focused on helping military families connect with careers, housing, and opportunities throughout the state. His passion for supporting veterans later expanded nationally through his work with Semper Forward, where he helped countless service members and their families build successful futures after military service. Despite his many accomplishments, those closest to Steve say his proudest role was being a father to his children, Ashton and Emma. Family members describe him as loving, dependable, and deeply devoted to those he cared about. He was known for his ability to inspire others through both his words and actions, always leading with kindness, humility, and integrity. As news of his passing spread across Wisconsin and beyond, tributes poured in from veterans, community leaders, coworkers, and friends reflecting on the lasting impact he made throughout his life. Many described Steve as a man whose legacy was rooted in service, compassion, and unwavering dedication to helping others succeed. Steve Janke leaves behind a legacy that will continue through the countless lives he touched, the veterans he supported, and the communities he strengthened.
