John Mendoza Jr. Obituary, Death – Family and Friends Mourn

Family members, friends, and community residents are grieving the loss of 18-year-old John Mendoza Jr., who died early Monday morning following an officer-involved shooting in Lake Jackson, Texas.

According to authorities, the incident began shortly after midnight, around 12:09 a.m., when a deputy with the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office attempted to conduct a traffic stop near the intersection of FM 2004 and This Way Street. Officials reported that the vehicle continued driving, resulting in a brief pursuit.

Investigators stated that the pursuit came to an end when the vehicle entered the garage of a residence located on Indian Warrior Trail. During the encounter that followed, the deputy discharged his firearm, striking Mendoza. Emergency responders transported him to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Attorney Charles Adams, who is representing Mendoza’s family, said the teenager had spent part of the evening playing basketball with friends. According to Adams, the group later gathered at a friend’s home and planned to take a walk at a nearby track. He stated that the teens believed they were being monitored by law enforcement and eventually left the area in Mendoza’s vehicle before the traffic stop occurred.

The deputy involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure in incidents of this nature. Multiple agencies, including the Texas Rangers, the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office, and the Brazoria County District Attorney’s Office, are conducting an investigation to determine exactly what happened.
