The Muscatine, Iowa community is grieving an unimaginable tragedy following the deaths of Lesa McFarland and five of her children in a devastating murder-suicide that has left family members, friends, classmates, coworkers, and neighbors heartbroken.

Authorities say 51-year-old Lesa McFarland, along with her children Dakota Whitlow, 32, Austin Harris, 29, Ryle McFarland, 20, Mark McFarland, 16, and Ryan McFarland Jr., 13, lost their lives during a series of shootings on June 1, 2026. Investigators later located Ryan Willis McFarland, 52, deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The tragedy has shaken the entire Muscatine community, where the family was known and loved by many. As loved ones struggle to process the devastating loss, tributes continue pouring in honoring the lives, personalities, and futures of those taken far too soon.

According to investigators, officers first responded to a residence on Park Avenue shortly after noon on June 1, where several victims were discovered.
