Sanford was well known throughout the Columbus area as a businessman and the owner of Trimjoist Corporation. Investigators have not yet determined where the aircraft originated or where it was headed before the crash. Officials from nearby airports stated they could not confirm whether the flight had departed from Columbus-Lowndes Airport or George M. Bryan Airport in Starkville. The investigation into the accident is expected to be led by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). Emergency management officials also confirmed that Homeland Security was notified as part of standard reporting procedures following an aviation incident.
